It’s a fun topic, “What about cars do movies get wrong?” and there are many, many things to mention. Continuity, broken cars being fixed in the next scene, or replaced with a different model, incorrect sounds, drivers never looking ahead...
But come on, the last paragraph says, “No F&F, that’s too easy” and yet half the responses:
Reading is hard. And low-hanging fruit is... easy to reach?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I say, just about any time a car is in the air, in a movie, the landing would have resulted in complete destruction of the car. It’s possible to do, just ask any WRC driver
. But this:
Just... no.

bikes.
I have yet to see a movie where they get the sound of the bike right. Its either Dirtbikes that sound like Harleys, harleys that sounds like V8s, Ducatis that sound like I4s.
NEVER the right one.

Cars exploding on impact. Even Ron in is guilty of this, other movies are even more egregious. Light tap... Boom!

That’s why I love that Family Guy gif with the horse exploding. I laughed so hard at that when I first saw it.

Also, bikes being slow. I mean most modern bikes can easily catch up to any car.

In the picture you show the suspension isn’t even at full extension. It’s like the car is at normal ride height in midair.

yes, this. hell, my SV650 (which was a slow-medium speed bike) would run a 12.3 quarter with a average rider on it.

hahaha, it’s almost like -
now bear with me here, this may come as a shock - they (gasp) took footage of the car sitting on the ground and... used...
computers!
to put it up in the air like that. haha of all the car jumps I can think of, this was one of the worst.

When I got there last night , there were about 50 replies, and yeah most of them were F&F references. So I sorted comments by oldest and gave a star to whomever made t he first one. Found a few other good suggestions to star, too.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to promote the “Wilhelm of car starters” collection that I’ve been working on, but it didn’t get much response. I guess it got buried by more F&F commen ts.
I see it’s up to about 350 comments now, and Erica’s comment is the only one that shows up at first, being a staff comment . I kinda feel bad for her because she’s new and I don’t think she’s gotten the hang of how Kinja comments work yet. I bet she would have composed her c omment better if she knew it was going to be spotlit like that.

What about Mad Max? Those movies are old motorcycle porn.

You can watch the car implode after the jump in a certain movie:
If you understood how the front subframe was mounted you would understand how dumb this is.

Somewhat related: I watched Speed Kills yesterday (w/ John Travolta), it was a fairly low budget affair, but a decently engaging story/plot. At one point there was a powerboat that I’m all but certain had an LED bar mounted to the front (like you see on off-road vehicles/trucks). This movie was supposed to take place in the 70's and 80's.

if you want to see a movie get cars wrogn watch 200MPH.
first of the hero car of the movie is this FC RX-7
which for the last few scenes changes into this S14
As for technical things, they call the RX-7 both an MX5 and M X7 several times. and the best line in the movies is where they are talking about preparing for the big race. they decide the that the car needs more power, but one character says “you cant run NAWS in these, the engine is to little for the extra power”. I mean come on. Also the whole bit is that the lead character needs to hit 200mph in order to win the race against the king street racer, who killed his brother in a race at the beginning of the movie. but the race is all short straights, and sharp turns, where top speed really wouldn’t matter and no way would either car could hit 200mph.
Its such a bad movie, but its worth watching just for laughs.

putting your feet up on the dash, is just about the stupidest thing you can do when bracing for impact . I know air bags were a far off dream at the time, but knees and faces don’ t get along well.

I always liked the one Clarkson reference on this...
“If you are driving a car that is more powerful
than the car chasing you...just drive faster.”

Another on in 200mph the mechanic draws up some designs of what the car will look like then they are done “perfecting” it. I think i drew these in 5th grade.
makes the scene where Jesse id des igning the Supra look so legit.

I’ve read somewhere that the Gone in 60 Seconds jump is pretty accurate. If you hit a ramp at that angle at that speed shown on the speedo, you’d go roughly that far and that high. (Not my calcs though). That CGI is just awful though.
And they do get some credit for the landing, it was pretty rough, almost lost control, and basically killed the car in the movie. (Still not realistic, they destroyed 4 stunt cars faking that jump, but for a movie it’s pretty close.)
The original Gone in 60's jump is completely real, and ended up compressing H.B. Halick’s spine and causing him to never quite walk the same afterward.

There’s a cheesy youtube video on the physics of it, but it ignores the impact of landing. But yeah, the trajectory was... within reason I guess.

I had to look up how they did that jump, they used a crane to lift the car to get the “in the air” shot. No word if they lifted it under the frame or under the tires.
That CGI is pretty awful though.

I’ll give them credit for making the landing “movie rough”, it’s far better than the Transporter sequels
.

Interesting! I didn’t give them that much credit obviously.
I liked the movie when it first came out, but like most things of that sort, it looks much worse in hindsight.

Most performance cars don't really have a huge amount of suspension travel. A few inches up and a few down, that's it. It's part of the harsh ride package, where consistent geometry trumps everything else.

What I hate most (exept for the obvious not logical stuff)
- Sped up films. Car that are sped up and move way too fast with way too little bodyroll. Drives me nuts...why not just drive faster?
-Exhaust gases. Cars that are supposed to have been driven a while but the engines are still cold..
